Art as the Cure™
My name is Ben Dowling and I'm a pianist - and an Agape Media International (AMI) musical artist.
Several years ago, I was inspired to create something that could practically serve people during times of crisis and challenge. I'd always known that music and the arts could act as practical medicine for people in that situaion and wanted to share that idea with the world.
I got together with visual artist Mark Wagner to create a project that could immerse someone into an audio/visual field of profound beauty and peace. I figured that by using both the aural and visual pathways, we could create an experience that would not only be great art, but could help people under some of the most challenging life situations - from healing and relationships to loss and life transition.
In order to serve this purpose, I had to search for a whole new kind of contemplative music. It needed to balance between strong artistic integrity and the functional need of not dominating the center of attention - so it could emotionally carry the listener yet still support conversation and processing.
Mark had to take his paintings, drawings and sketches and put them into the time domain - and then to synchronize that work with the music. He had to take an artform that is static and unchanging, and introduce the time element to it. As a gifted artist, he accomplished this in an inspired way.
We call the project, "The Path of Peace." If I may say so, it's amazing and unique in the world. It is a new kind of art and a new kind of medicine. It can help you to quiet your mind, your environment and your life, so that you are available to the extraordinary creativity that is at the center of each of us.
But I must warn you, although the project has high "coolness factor," the experience is not dramatic. It's not MTV. It is an ambient art form in slow motion. Its real value grows over time.
You can set it up and run it literally all day long, and it will quietly alter your environment, open your thinking and generate peace through the transformative power of beauty.
